Your script stood out among hundreds of others. What was the inspiration for your story and why did you write a script instead of a short story or a novel? It started out as a skit. I was just thinking about my protagonist saying some funny stuff and it grew from there. I absolutely love the cinema. THE LAST SHOGUN OF NORTH PHILLY is so colorful and so different a book wouldn’t do it justice.
How long did it take you to write your script...and what is your writing process? Do you outline...use index cards...white board...or just start with FADE IN? This project took me about 10 days to write. I just started with a cool scene and some witty dialog and it grew from there. No outline, no notes, just having fun.
What is your ultimate ambition as a writer? I want my work to inspire other writers. I want to make dope projects that people enjoy for years to come.
Was your entry at The Wiki Screenplay Contest a full script or “the first ten pages”? Why did you make that choice? First ten page entry. I knew if I could snag the reader in ten pages I was on the right track.
What’s your all-time favorite movie or television show...and why? To pick one favorite movie would be impossible. I love film, but I would have to list Pulp Fiction, Scarface, Do the Right Thing, and The Harder They Fall as a few of my favorites. Those films kill it with the dialog I'm also a sucker for 80’s films. Favorite television show. “American Gods, The Godfather of Harlem and of course Miami Vice.”
What advice do you have for writers hoping to win a contest or place as a finalist as you have? Write what makes you happy. Take the criticism but with a grain of salt. Most importantly, believe in your work. If you don’t believe in it how is anyone else going to believe in it?
What else are you working on that the world needs to know about? In pre-production with a series called DARK. I shot a proof of concept, and it did very well on the festival circuit. Be on the lookout hopefully, you’ll be seeing it next fall.
