Where do you live (City, State, or Country)? Atlanta, GA USA
Your script stood out among hundreds of others. What was the inspiration for your story and why did you write a script instead of a short story or a novel? This script is based on an award-winning short story my daughter wrote at age 12 – she is now in her mid 40s. I’ve always loved it and several years ago, asked her to work with me to adapt it into a feature film featuring a mixed-race child and having it be about “Sharing our Blessings”. It was a labor of love.
How long did it take you to write your script...and what is your writing process? Do you outline...use index cards...white board...or just start with FADE IN? I’m still writing it! Every time I re-read it, I find something I want to “fix” or “embellish”, add or delete. Since it was an adaptation of a short story, I had my basic idea. What was needed was a before and after story. When I would hit a roadblock, I would go walking, thinking out loud and then record my newest scenes to be added later and talking it over with my daughter, who always came up with a great solution. After the first “completion” I did a table read and one of the critiques was, “there’s two stories here – pick one”. After some consideration and rumination on that critique, I decided I agreed and wrote the 2 nd script, which became the sequel to I ONLY WANTED TO HELP, titled WHEN HELPING HURTS. It follows our cast of characters as our 12-year-old protag grows into adulthood. And I use FADE IN software.
What is your ultimate ambition as a writer? I began writing scripts as an outreach of my acting. I was cast in an historic film and kept finding anachronisms and telling the producer – as well as making suggestions for filming. Then I had the privilege of adapting 3 of Karen White’s novels into screenplays. One of my favorite novels, The Time Between, with Karen’s permission and collaboration, became a 6-Episode limited series adaptation. We’re still hopeful it will be produced for streaming. So, my ultimate ambition is, as it is for most screenwriters: to bring life to my work and participate in its production to the screen.
Was your entry at The Wiki Screenplay Contest a full script or “the first ten pages”? Why did you make that choice? A full script, with analysis. I had produced a table read with professional actors in May 2025 and it was so “awe mazing” to hear my work brought to life. I also worked early in the writing process with a professional screenwriter to tighten and make it more professional and cinematic. I entered seeking validation – which we all desire and need and for the analysis of another professional.
What’s your all-time favorite movie or television show...and why? Outlander. I read most of Diana’s books and loved them, so I had great anticipation. I really enjoy history and admire how a writer can take actual history and create fictional characters in true settings. The production was outstanding; casting and acting were superb. Costuming, cinematography – everything to the highest standards. On a personal note, as I was writing Episode 5 of The Time Between, I too, had the opportunity to write original scenes and settings that were not part of the book. Doing the research into the world of Budapest during WW II – history, wardrobe, music, etc. - to bring the world of the Szarka sisters’ to life gave me such pleasure.
What advice do you have for writers hoping to win a contest or place as a finalist as you have? I don’t know that I’m qualified to give anyone advice on writing. I can only encourage anyone to just do it – and maybe get a thicker skin!
What else are you working on that the world needs to know about? The sequel to I ONLY WANTED TO HELP, WHEN HELPING HURTS, which follows Raven into adulthood. Most of the original cast returns. Victoria follows her father’s footsteps into Georgia politics. Stephen executes a high-stakes rescue mission in Iraq. Raven and Stephen marry and there’s some fun antics by adorable children. The devastating story of Raven’s beloved Isabelle, her grandmother’s black housekeeper, who is Raven’s touchstone throughout her life. And the climactic ending when a group of sheltered girls are abducted to be trafficked juxtaposed against the glittering backdrop of Atlanta’s finest celebrating Raven’s triumphant “Citizen of The Year” award gala. I am particularly proud of my 6-episode limited series of Karen White’s beloved novel, THE TIME BETWEEN. The work will always have a place in my heart and we are both keen to see it brought to life. It is still available – both Karen’s book and my screenplay. Karen also wrote a series of books set in Charleston, S.C. and gave me the privilege of adapting the first two books into limited series: THE HOUSE ON TRADD STREET and THE GIRL ON LEGARE STREET. Each book broke down into 4 one-hour episodes – and they’re ready to go. This is a great series opportunity for a streaming service as there are now more than 9 books available for adaptation.
