Where do you live (City, State, or Country)? Hollywood, CA
Your script stood out among hundreds of others. What was the inspiration for your story and why did you write a script instead of a short story or a novel? The title was really my inspiration - I wanted to explore the mechanics of friendship. “What Are Friends For?” was intended to answer, for myself, what it takes to be a friend and to have a friend, and is it worth the trouble? I wrote it as a TV script because I feel like that medium allows for the most intimate conversation with an audience.
How long did it take you to write your script...and what is your writing process? Do you outline...use index cards...white board...or just start with FADE IN? I started playing with the idea a few years ago, sort of just thinking about it. Then last year I decided to get serious and actually write it - it probably took about 6 months from outline to usable draft. I definitely outline - sometimes on a white board, sometimes index cards or post its, the exact process varies depending how complicated the story is. I’m currently working on a comedic telenovela that’s been on all of the above!
What is your ultimate ambition as a writer? I want to help people understand themselves and each other better. To make the world a better place.
Which film or television writers inspire you? Why? Joss Whedon is a favorite of mine - he does such a great job of combining entertainment with thematic content.
What’s your all-time favorite movie or television show? The answer to that changes much too often to be relevant!
What advice do you have for writers hoping to win a contest or place as a finalist as you have? Get feedback, work with other writers, don’t be afraid to give the script as much time as it needs.
What else are you working on that the world needs to know about? As I mentioned, there’s the comedic telenovela that I’m really excited about, and I just started outlining a sci-fi action pilot that I’m looking forward to getting into.
