Where do you live (City, State, or Country)? Originally from Vancouver, Canada, I currently live and work in Hong Kong, China.
Your script stood out among hundreds of others. What was the inspiration for your story and why did you write a script instead of a short story or a novel? The inspiration for my short screenplay, DEADBEAT (DAD), comes from my personal and professional experiences as a parent and a teacher. I’m passionate about writing in the screenplay format, and I envision this screenplay to be the start of an over-the-top, visually arresting series where each episode asks questions about raising children today.
How long did it take you to write your script...and what is your writing process? Do you outline...use index cards...white board...or just start with FADE IN? This screenplay is a short and contained story, so the first draft took me a month to write. And YES, it started with FADE IN. World building started after pages had been written.
What is your ultimate ambition as a writer? Writing screenplays that are professionally produced and turned into visual experiences that entertain and connect with audiences.
Was your entry at The Wiki Screenplay Contest a full script or “the first ten pages”? Why did you make that choice? My entry was for full ‘short script’. I chose this because I’ve purchased Wiki’s Executive Notes in the past and they were excellent. I was eager to see what their analysts thought of this latest draft of DEADBEAT (DAD).
What’s your all-time favorite movie or television show...and why? This is difficult – haha. I guess I would choose AKIRA, as it’s blend of storytelling and visual artistry is of the highest quality. This film has left an incredible impression on me.
What advice do you have for writers hoping to win a contest or place as a finalist as you have? Keep writing. Let motivation come through practice. Write your questions down. Talk to your stories, get to know them. Talk to your characters, out loud. Write badly. Write what you love. Write for you only. Write for everybody. Keep writing.
What else are you working on that the world needs to know about? I have written a feature-length screenplay titled, BUTTERFLY & ONI, which has been a semi-finalist at Wiki two times so far. I love to work on this screenplay, and need to keep working on it so I can share it with movie-going audiences soon.
