Where do you live (City, State, or Country)? Denver, Colorado, United States
Your script stood out among hundreds of others. What was the inspiration for your story and why did you write a script instead of a short story or a novel? Honestly, I wanted to make something that “felt” fresh. Or at least something that isn’t commonly used when talking about a serial killer’s motive. Floriography aka the Victorian language of Flowers was HUGE during the Victorian era for the folks who couldn’t speak. Whether that was because they were being hunted, oppressed, in hiding, etc. I just found it fascinating and poetically beautiful that folks used flowers to convey feelings, messages or just general thoughts. Something we even still do till this day.
How long did it take you to write your script...and what is your writing process? Do you outline...use index cards...white board...or just start with FADE IN? I almost always break it down into 3 acts on a whiteboard. I zoom out far (scope wise) and determine from a high level “WHAT” do I want this story to be about. What am I trying to convey? Then from there, I bullet point what happens in this act to make sure I am staying on tracks to tell a cohesive story.
What is your ultimate ambition as a writer? Honestly, I just want to tell stories that feel unique/fresh and feature folks who need that representation in today’s world. Awards are nice, money is nice, but your stories last forever with people. That’s what I am aiming for at the very end of the day. Something they watch/read with their kids.
Was your entry at The Wiki Screenplay Contest a full script or “the first ten pages”? Why did you make that choice? 10 pages. I wanted to see if I had any legs with this. I wrote it fast and was curious if it could hold up. I have finished the script since the contest though!
What’s your all-time favorite movie or television show...and why? Arrival. It’s heavily inspired by the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which suggests that the language you speak influences how you think. Again, that is fresh and unique. I think what I love most is how it doesn’t tell its story in a straight line, like from beginning to end but instead loops back on itself, just like the alien language. To me that’s gold.
What advice do you have for writers hoping to win a contest or place as a finalist as you have? Write about something that has a personal tie to you. Or something that REALLY interests you. Chasing trends (to me) only works but so far before you end up making something that is a carbon copy of something else. Everyone has a story, and they have interesting plot points along the way that you can spin into a story. Tell it. Because you naturally have all the information you need!
What else are you working on that the world needs to know about? I am currently fixing up Where the tulips bloom and the next project I am working is really exciting but still being formed.
