Where do you live (City, State, or Country)? Mesa, AZ
Your script stood out among hundreds of others. What was the inspiration for your story and why did you write a script instead of a short story or a novel? This short script is an extract from a larger feature length script. I wanted to show what made Bach exceptional in a single moment. Instead of explaining his genius, I built a situation where he had to solve a nearly impossible musical problem under pressure. The story relies on timing, sound, and performance. The tension comes from pauses, reactions, and the music itself, which works more naturally on screen than in prose.
How long did it take you to write your script...and what is your writing process? Do you outline...use index cards...white board...or just start with FADE IN? I tend to outline quite a bit. I used index cards, white boards and even engineering project planning software at one point.
What is your ultimate ambition as a writer? I want my script made into a movie. My feature length script could be said to be both a sequel and a prequel to Amadeus.
Was your entry at The Wiki Screenplay Contest a full script or “the first ten pages”? Why did you make that choice? It was a short script. Only about 6 pages.
What’s your all-time favorite movie or television show...and why? Amadeus is definitely on my top ten list. I love classical music. The set design, the acting, the script and it’s Mozart! What’s not to love?
What advice do you have for writers hoping to win a contest or place as a finalist as you have? Amadeus is definitely on my top ten list. I love classical music. The set design, the acting, the script and it’s Mozart! What’s not to love?
What else are you working on that the world needs to know about? I’m currently developing a feature-length screenplay called Discovering Bach. It expands on similar themes, exploring Bach’s life and legacy through a more ambitious, multi- layered story that connects his music to different times and perspectives. Like this short, it focuses on making his genius feel immediate and experiential, but on a much larger scale.
